Smart Home Project Helps Paralyzed Army SFC Weather Lifes Storms

CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME ATTENDS KENWORTHY HOME DEDICATION CEREMONY

Having weathered yet another storm, Army Sergeant First Class Anthony Kenworthy is finally home. The young veteran, who suffered a C-6 spinal cord injury after his vehicle was struck by an IED during a tour of Afghanistan in 2014, was the latest recipient of a mortgage-free Smart Home, provided by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Kenworthy and his family were handed the keys to his new Land O’ Lakes, Florida home shortly before Columbus Day Weekend with much fanfare, despite the day’s severe thunderstorms. Designed specifically to accommodate Kenworthy’s needs as a quadriplegic,  the home is adorned with beautiful flooring provided by Mohawk, with installation and other donated materials provided by Carpet Corner Carpet One Floor & Home and its owner, Jon Mayer in Holiday, FL . The home’s lower counters, wide hallways and doorways will allow Kenworthy to wheel about freely, with a ceiling track lift providing further assistance- all aimed at attaining ultimate independence and comfort. Carpet Corner’s Brian Jonas served as the home project manager.

The day wasn’t without its bittersweet moments. Kenworthy was overcome with emotion as he remembered his dear friend Green Beret Staff Sergeant Girard “Jerry” Gass. It was Gass who saved Kenworthy’s life following that battlefield explosion – sadly, Gass would lose his own life in the line of duty just two weeks later. His wife, Nancy Gass, was the first Tunnel to Towers Gold Star Family Home Program recipient.

“I made it home, but one of my buddies didn’t. Jerry didn’t,” Kenworthy said. “When I found out they were giving Nancy a home, I was very excited.”
